On 16 September 2015, at 22:54:33 (UTC) (local time : UTC-3) a magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck the Chilean coast, about 46km west of Illapel. Preliminary information can be found from USGS. The earthquake triggered a transpacific tsunami which was observed in California. Professors Pat Lynett and Costas Synolakis and PhD students Nikos Kalligeris, Vassilis Skanavis, Hoda El-Safti and Sasan Tavakol were in Ventura Harbor at 4:30am on 17 September and deployed GPS floats and flow markers to measure tsunami currents, see Nature News.
